Churachandpur: Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar on Friday visited flood-affected areas of the district to assess the damage caused by flash floods in several parts of Churachandpur town and its surrounding areas.

According to local sources, heavy rainfall since Thursday afternoon caused local streams and rivulets to overflow, triggering flash floods in many low-lying localities. Families living along the banks of these water bodies were among the worst affected, forcing many residents to evacuate to safer places.

A tragic incident occurred on Thursday along the Lanva River, where Thangjohnson, son of the late Paukhanmung from New Lamka Vengnuam South, reportedly drowned while attempting to retrieve construction materials that had been swept away by strong currents during embankment construction work. As of now, there has been been no trace of the missing person.

The flood-affected areas visited by the DC and his team included Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang and Beulalane within Churachandpur town.

During the visit, the DC interacted with affected families and distributed relief materials. He assured residents of all possible support from the district administration and said that a damage assessment was underway to facilitate further assistance.

The DC and district administration officials also visited various philanthropic organisations involved in the search operation for the missing person along the Tuitha River.

They distributed drinking water and refreshments to the search teams. The district administration appreciated the efforts of the organisations participating in the search operation.

The Deputy Commissioner was accompanied by Additional Deputy Commissioner Seiminthang Lenthang, Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) and other district administration officials.
