Ukhrul: Two civilians were reportedly killed and several others injured after suspected armed militants ambushed vehicles near TM Kasom village in Ukhrul district on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred a day after Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Ukhrul district and assured the public of safe passage along the Imphal–Ukhrul road on National Highway 202.

According to sources, the ambush took place around 3 pm when residents of Ukhrul travelling from Imphal came under a sudden gun attack.

The firing reportedly resulted in the death of two individuals on the spot, including a retired soldier of the Naga Regiment, while several others sustained injuries.

The deceased have been identified as Yaruingam Vashum (42) from Kharasom CV village and Chinaoshang Shokwungnao (45) from Tashar village.

Sources also said that at least five vehicles were damaged during the attack.

A viral video circulating on social media shows a passenger from one of the attacked vehicles shouting for help, while another co-traveller was seen bleeding profusely from bullet wounds.

As of the time of filing the report, the exact number of injured persons is yet to be officially confirmed.
