Imphal: Unidentified miscreants allegedly set ablaze an Imphal-bound truck carrying TMT bars and plastic barrels at Kabinam village in Senapati district along National Highway-2 on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 8:30 am when the Nagaland-registered vehicle was torched. The motive behind the arson is yet to be ascertained.
In a statement, the All Naga Traders Association, Manipur (ANTAM) said the truck belonged to the General Secretary of the North East Federation of Trade Unions. The association expressed serious concern over the broad daylight attack, stating that the incident has created panic among traders and transporters operating along the highway.
Strongly condemning the act, the Maralui Karalimei Swijoikang (Maram Students’ Union) described the incident as a deliberate act of arson carried out by unknown miscreants. The union stated that such criminal activities threaten peace, public safety, and the rule of law, and undermine the security, dignity, and harmony of the Maram community.
The union emphasised that NH-2 serves as a lifeline of the state and any disruption along the highway directly affects the socio-economic well-being and daily lives of the people.
The Maram Students’ Union called upon the authorities to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation and take stringent legal action against those responsible. It also urged the perpetrators to surrender within 48 hours, warning that failure to do so may compel the union to resort to democratic forms of agitation.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and justice, the union appealed to all sections of society to remain calm and cooperate with authorities to restore normalcy and ensure that justice is served.
