Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC) on Tuesday announced it will impose a trade embargo across Naga areas starting midnight of September 8, protesting the ongoing border fencing and the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border.
The decision was taken during the UNC Presidential Council meeting held on August 11.
In a statement, the UNC said the Naga people had repeatedly conveyed their position to the Government of India through official memoranda, agitations, demonstrations, public rallies and press statements since January 2024. Despite these efforts, it accused the Centre of maintaining an “indifferent attitude.”
The Council warned of stronger agitations to oppose the scrapping of FMR and construction of border fencing, which it said threaten Naga homeland, identity and inherent land rights. It also appealed for cooperation and solidarity from Naga communities in Manipur and across borders to defend their rights, culture, and traditional ties in the fight for a dignified future.
