Chandel: With the motive to bring together all the offspring of Phiran village and celebrate their success in life, though scattered far and wide, the Phiran (Longkhu) Āngsung Alum 2025 was held at Phiran Village in Chandel district on Thursday

The Phiran (Longkhu) Āngsung Alum 2025, the first such event, was attended by hundreds of the offspring of Phiran village, marking the bonding of brotherhood and shared respect.

According to L. Wolring, patron of the event, Phiran (Longkhu) village is one of the oldest villages of the Anal Nagas and dates back to about 100 AD. Celebrated under the theme, “Lonkhu is Shining Forever,” Wolring informed that the theme was chosen to celebrate the success of the offspring of the village.

Though scattered far and wide with many having moved on and living in other villages, they have made a name for themselves in various fields, be it education, the medical field, or even the religious sphere, Wolring said. He added that the theme was chosen so that they may continue to celebrate such success and shine forever.

Speaking on the occasion, Ng. Lorho, the president of the United Naga Council (UNC), appreciated the village and said that such historic villages should be well preserved. He especially called for supporting, acknowledging, and respecting those who stay back in the villages and protect them.

“We must respect those villagers who remain in villages such as this and guard and protect them. Without them, we would lose our history, and they are the ones preserving our roots and history,” said Lorho.

As part of the celebration, Ng. Lorho also unveiled a monolith and released a souvenir titled Phiran (Longkhu) Āngsung Alum 2025.

Meanwhile, Rev. James Tangshel, Director of Catholic Medical Centre (CMC), Koirengei, Imphal, also spoke of the importance of God and human relationships in such celebrations. He called on the people to always remember God.

Brief history of Phiran village
In a souvenir released as part of the celebration, L. Wolring stated that the origin of Longkhu (Phiran) village has been traced to Chala Jowl around 100 AD. The clans namely Khumlo, Wangshol, Wango, Sinruwung, Langlu, Wanglum, and Rituwn moved to the place called Burum, which is situated within the boundary of Khumbung village, for the purpose of jhum cultivation. After the harvest, they constructed houses/huts and lived there for many years. Thereafter, they crossed the Dujang River and settled at Dubol (Hnavowl), which was also known as Kojong Khun, he stated.

He further stated that while living at Dubol, many households moved to the hill (Lon) and then shifted to the present location called Longkhu (Phiran), which was named by those villagers of Dubol. The village is situated in a remote corner of Manipur hills and is one of the oldest Anal Naga villages in Chandel district, Manipur.

Even though the exact year of the existence of Longkhu village is unknown, Wolring stated that it was ruled by priests for many centuries until the village administration was set up by the British colonial rule.

In the year 1894, S.R. Chumtham became the first headman of Longkhu as he possessed super physical power, which enabled him to control his village and deal with the village administration affairs efficiently, he added.

At present, Longkhu (Phiran) village has around 40 households with about 300 people. Over the years, its offspring have spread all across Chandel district, excelling in various fields.
