Imphal: In a significant development, Manipur police have arrested four members of the proscribed KYKL (SOREPA) in connection with the abduction and assault of a 23-year-old railway driver from Noney district.
According to police sources, the arrests were made during the investigation of the abduction and assault case involving Joshua Kamei, a 23-year-old railway driver from Kambiron (Puiluan Village), Noney. The police, acting on intelligence, raided a hideout in Urup Mayai Leikai, Imphal East district, on Thursday.
During the operation, four members of KYKL (SOREPA) were apprehended. The suspects have been identified as Hijam Nikhil Singh (27), Hijam Thanglen Meitei (30), Thongam Ningthem Singh (32), and Gobin Elangbam (29). Police recovered one Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), one .303 rifle, two Maruti Gypsy vehicles, and other incriminating items from the hideout.
In addition, two drug users found in the suspects’ custody were also rescued during the raid. The authorities have registered a case, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, the Rongmei Naga Students’ Organization Manipur (RNSOM) has strongly condemned the incident, alleging that Joshua Kamei, son of Kanjei Kamei of Kambiron (Puiluan) Village, was abducted and brutally assaulted by Arambai Tengol extremists near Kheikhu Kabui Khul Gate in Imphal East.
According to the RNSOM, the abduction occurred on November 5 at around 12 p.m. when Arambai Tengol militants forcibly took Kamei and subjected him to severe torture and interrogation at their camp. The organization described this act as a grave violation of human rights, threatening the dignity and safety of the Naga community.
The RNSOM called for an immediate end to the violent activities perpetrated by Arambai Tengol extremists and demanded a thorough investigation, prosecution, and justice for the victim. The student organization emphasized the importance of community unity to combat senseless violence and extortion, reiterating its stand on zero tolerance for violence and the uncompromising pursuit of justice.
The RNSOM also urged the authorities to take immediate action to address the increasing violence in the region and prevent further escalation.
