Imphal: Amidst the unrest in Manipur since May 3, 2023, a moment of pride has emerged on the international stage. At the recently concluded 20th Kazan International Film Festival in Russia, Manipuri filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar’s feature film ‘Joseph’s Son‘ earned a prestigious Special Jury Mention, marking a moment of celebration for the state.
The festival, held from September 6 to 11, 2024, is renowned for its emphasis on cultural dialogue and human values.
This recognition for Haobam follows another proud moment for Manipuri cinema, when filmmaker Romi Meitei won Best Director for his film Eikhoigi Yum just a year ago. The accolades for both directors underscore the global impact of Manipuri cinema, despite ongoing turmoil at home.
Joseph’s Son, one of two films by Haobam showcased at the festival, follows a father’s search for his missing son after a football match. Through this poignant narrative, the film reflects the ethnic conflict and social divides in Manipur. Shot across the hill districts of Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Tamenglong, and Imphal, Joseph’s Son delves into themes of trauma, identity, and resilience while highlighting the complex relationship between Manipur’s hill tribes and valley dwellers.
What sets Joseph’s Son apart is its multilingual dialogue, incorporating Tangkhul, Meiteilon, Thadou, Nepali, and Bihari languages. Renowned Tangkhul folk singer Rewben Mashangva plays the lead role, adding authenticity to the film’s representation of Manipur’s diverse cultural fabric.
Haobam, known for his previous film Loktak Lairembee (Lady of the Lake), which established him on the international stage, continues to showcase the socio-political struggles and beauty of Manipur through his work. With Joseph’s Son, he once again brings attention to the challenges facing his home state.
The Kazan International Film Festival 2024 featured over 140 films from 40 countries, with the main competition highlighting stories of moral dilemmas and human resilience.
The awards ceremony was held at the Galiasgar Kamal Tatar State Academic Theater, where Joseph’s Son was honored. The festival’s top prize for Best Feature Film went to Legends of Eternal Snows by Russian director Alexey Romanov, while the NETPAC Award was given to Glass Curtain by Fikret Reyhan from Turkey.
Despite the ongoing challenges in Manipur, the international recognition of Haobam’s work serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing the resilience and creativity that continues to flourish in the region.
