Thoubal: A viral video showing individuals removing a flag from a government office and replacing it with another, speculated to be the Kangleipak or Salai Taret flag, has sparked widespread criticism on social media. Initial reports suggested the Indian tricolour was taken down.
The incident occurred at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Thoubal district, where the miscreants were seen replacing a flag with a seven-coloured one, captured by onlookers who cheered during the act.
However, Thoubal Deputy Commissioner A Subhash Singh, speaking to EastMojo, refuted the claims, clarifying that the video depicted protestors removing an old Salai Taret flag and replacing it with a new one. He confirmed the incident took place at the main gate of the DC complex, not the main office.
“It was an old Salai Taret flag taken down by protesting students and replaced with a new one. That flag has since been removed,” said DC Subhash Singh. He further clarified, “We don’t usually hoist a flag at the main gate. The tricolour is flown at the main office complex.”
The incident followed a large rally held across the Imphal Valley, including Thoubal, where students expressed their frustration over the state’s prolonged issues. Representatives of the Thoubal Apunba Students later submitted a memorandum to the DC, demanding the protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity.
