Guwahati: The Thadou Tribe Council, General Headquarters (TTC-GHQ), has issued a firm rebuttal regarding recent remarks made by Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
During his address on August 12, 2024, on the floor of the Manipur State Assembly, Singh claimed that the Thadous had proposed sending a delegation of 20-30 people to Imphal, with more proposals from Kuki-Zo cognate tribes. The TTC-GHQ has denounced these claims as “false and unfounded.”
According to the Thadou Tribe Council, the apex body of the Thadou Tribe, they have no knowledge of any such proposal or plan, labeling anything outside the purview of the council as invalid.
In a strongly worded statement, the TTC-GHQ suggested that N. Biren Singh’s claims were a deliberate attempt to mislead the people of Manipur and a political maneuver aimed at appeasing his superiors in Delhi.
The Thadou Tribe Council emphasized that while the Thadous are a peace-loving community and the largest tribe in present-day Manipur, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice and a sustainable political solution, which they believe is necessary before any meaningful peace can be established.
The TTC-GHQ also addressed the emergence of a newly formed group known as the Thadou Community International (TCI). They clarified that this entity was created without the knowledge or endorsement of the Thadou Tribe Council or any official Thadou-based organizations, such as youth, women, and student bodies.
According to the council, the formation of this group did not follow proper procedures and appears to be the work of a few non-resident Thadou individuals with vested interests, allegedly in collusion with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
The council’s statement condemned the actions of these individuals and asserted that the so-called Thadou Community International (TCI) was a “bogus entity.” They further speculated that Singh’s comments in the Assembly might have been a response to an open letter from the TCI requesting not to be referred to as Kuki or any other name, raising concerns about a possible political agenda.
