Imphal: The gates of a dam located at Dolaithabi village in Imphal East was closed on Wednesday after an oil-like substance was found on the Iril river, raising concerns among residents living in the area over possible water contamination.
The Iril River, a significant waterway in the valley, originates from the hill ranges of Saikul in the neighboring Kangpokpi district.
Residents of Leitanpokpi Awang Leikai, situated approximately 27 km from Imphal city, raised an alarm with the government authorities upon discovering contamination in the river. In response, they immediately ceased using the water due to concerns about potential contamination.
The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) acted promptly, with Minister Susindro Meitei and engineers conducting an inspection of the affected area. Water samples were collected from multiple locations and sent for testing at various laboratories.
Initial tests indicated that all parameters were within permissible limits for untreated water. However, advanced laboratory testing is ongoing to determine the extent of contamination, as per PHED.
In the meantime, authorities have urged residents near the affected area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious incidents.
This incident occurred just a month after a significant release of heavy black furnace oil from the Leimakhong Power Plant in Imphal West. The oil flowed downstream to the nearby streams of Kanto Sabal and Sekmai, which serve as the primary water source for the livelihood of residents in the area.
