Imphal: Manipur police on Friday brought Mark Thangmang Haokip, who was arrested in New Delhi on May 24 for allegedly inciting communal enmity through social media posts, to Imphal.
Soon after he landed at Imphal airport, Haokip, who is reportedly the president of the International Human Rights Association, was taken to Imphal West police station.
Meanwhile, activist Haokip has been sent to judicial custody for 15 days till June 10 after he was produced before a local court.
According to sources, the court denied an eight-day police custody request for Haokip, which the police department had sought for “thorough interrogation and examination of documents”.
Notably, Mark Haokip had on Thursday tendered an unconditional apology for defaming the good image of freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu in a social media post in November 2021. Haokip said that the post was put up unintentionally and that he did not intention of provoking serious consequences or hurt the sentiments of the people.
Churachandpur Police lodged an FIR against the activist under Section 153-A/505(2) of IPC, related to inciting enmity between different groups or communities on grounds of race, place of birth, language or regional groups etc. and statements creating or promoting enmity hatred or ill-will between classes.
