Roughly a month before the Manipur Assembly elections in February, two BJP associates were reportedly shot dead on January 9 in Imphal West District.
According to media reports, Abujam John (58) and Abujam Tomba (37), associates of Agriculture Minister Oinam Lukhoi Singh, were killed by unidentified persons on Sunday night.
A group of miscreants reportedly arrived and opened fire on both the party workers near Machu Cinema Hall at Samurou. Abujam John succumbed to his wounds on the spot after being shot in his chest, whereas Abujam Tomba succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in a hospital on Monday morning.
John was an active worker associated with Wangoi MLA and Tomba worked in the Manipur police force. Protests have erupted across Manipur with several locals agitating against the killings.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited the families of the deceased on Monday morning and condemned the attack.
The state of Manipur will go into assembly polls in two phases with the first phase on February 27 and the second on March 3.
