Silchar: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized 1.30 lakh Yaba tablets valued at approximately ₹39 crore in Assam’s Cachar district and apprehended three persons in connection with the case, officials said on Tuesday.
The operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the trafficking of narcotics along National Highway 306, officials said. Acting on the information, a joint team intercepted two Tata trucks late on the night of November 20 in Cachar district.
During the search of the vehicles, officials recovered 1,30,000 Yaba tablets. Three individuals, identified as residents of Tripura, were apprehended at the spot, they said. Two mobile phones were also seized from their possession.
According to officials, the accused were allegedly transporting the contraband through Cachar district when they were intercepted by the joint team. The seized narcotics, along with the vehicles and other recovered items, were handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further legal action.
Officials said a detailed investigation was under way to determine the source of the seized drugs, the intended destination of the consignment and the larger network involved in the trafficking operation. Efforts were also being made to identify other persons linked to the case, they added.
Yaba tablets, a synthetic drug containing methamphetamine and caffeine, are among the narcotics frequently trafficked through the northeastern region, officials said. National highways are often used as transit routes for the movement of such contraband.
Assam Rifles has been conducting joint operations with various enforcement and intelligence agencies to curb drug trafficking in the region, officials said, adding that coordinated action and intelligence-sharing have led to several seizures in recent times.
