Dibrugarh, Jan 10: Two cadres of the NSCN-K (AM faction) were killed in a mortar attack at Khamtiang village in the Pangsau area of Myanmar on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as Lieutenant Avi Pochury and Sergeant Peyao Konyak.
According to sources, the attack was carried out by cadres of the NSCN-K (Yung Aung faction) while the victims were on duty.
The mortar shelling reportedly caused fatal injuries, leading to the death of both cadres on the spot.
Factional clashes are common within the NSCN, and sources said that long-standing rivalry was the primary reason behind the killing of the cadres.
“These groups often infiltrate the Indian border through jungle routes and enter Indian territory via the Pangsau Pass area to carry out their activities,” a source said.
Most of the time, these NSCN cadres allegedly enter Arunachal Pradesh and engage in extortion activities in the region.
“Extortion and kidnappings are common in Arunachal Pradesh, and cadres of these particular groups carry out such activities and demand high ransom,” an official said.
The India–Myanmar border spans 1,643 kilometres. Arunachal Pradesh shares the longest stretch of the boundary with the neighbouring country at 520 km, followed closely by Mizoram at 510 km. Manipur shares 398 km, while Nagaland has a 215-km-long border with Myanmar.
