CRPF hosts open football tournament under Khelo India in Kohima

The 78 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has organised a two-day open football tournament at WAPO Ground, Sechu-Zubza, Kohima, as part of the Khelo India scheme. The event is being held in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and under the aegis of the CRPF’s Manipur and Nagaland Sector.

The tournament, which began on 24 October, features eight teams competing over two days. On the opening day, four matches were played, with Phesama Students’ Union, Phoenix Football Club, and two other teams advancing to the semi-finals scheduled for the second day. The finalists will face off later in the day to determine the winner.

Inspector General (Manipur and Nagaland Sector) Rajendra Narayan Dash attended the event as the chief guest. In his address, he highlighted the importance of sports in developing team spirit, leadership, and physical fitness. Commandant Devnath Somkunwar of the 78 Battalion said that the CRPF’s involvement in such initiatives aims to promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen the bond between security forces and local communities.

Organisers said the tournament seeks to encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, and social integration among youth, while building a stronger sports culture in the region. Trophies, medals, and cash prizes will be awarded to the winning and runner-up teams, along with individual awards for best goalkeeper, best player, and top goal scorer.
