Members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) took to the streets of Guwahati on October 23 to demand justice for the cultural icon of the state, Zubeen Garg. The demonstration took place in the Dighalipukhuri area, with hundreds of students holding placards and chanting ‘Joi Zubeen Da’ and ‘We want justice’ slogans.
Thursday’s protest was part of a state-wide programme called “Nyay Samdal”, which translates to ‘Justice March’. The campaign has included earlier sit-ins and candlelight vigils aimed at pressing for a faster and more transparent investigation into the case.
In Guwahati, protestors, led by Samujjal Bhattacharya and Utpal Sarma, Chief Advisor and President respectively of the student body, passed through the Uzanbazar area calling for a time-bound probe and a prompt chargesheet. AASU leaders reiterated their demand that the investigation be watertight and that those responsible must be given exemplary punishment.

Similar demonstrations were reported in several areas, including Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Golaghat, and other parts of Upper Assam, which drew people from all walks of life.
The protests come amid ongoing investigations and legal proceedings connected to the death of Zubeen Garg on September 19. The student body had earlier staged several demonstrations, including a candlelight vigil on October 19 and a sit-in protest on October 14.
