A woman from Meghalaya has alleged that she was subjected to racist remarks in two separate incidents in the national capital on the same day. In a video shared on social media, she said that groups of men mocked her appearance and called her “Ching Chong” in two locations — once in Kamla Nagar and later inside a Delhi Metro train.
The woman said the first incident occurred when a group of men sitting on a scooter made comments as she walked past them in Kamla Nagar. “As I turned around, they laughed at me. I didn’t even feel like eating anything. I just booked a cab and left,” she said.
According to her, the second incident took place inside the Metro. “Some people were coming inside the Metro, and one of the guys again said ‘Ching Chong China’ and laughed,” she said, adding that both incidents happened within a few hours. “I have been to other countries, but they never made me feel like I don’t belong there. Today, in my own country, fellow Indians made me feel like I don’t belong here,” she said in the video.
Responding to her post, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju urged her to report the matter to the authorities. “Dear sister, sadly such loony people do exist. Next time, capture their photos and report to Delhi Police NE Cell. Govt has created a Special Police Unit to take action against any atrocity or unlawful act against North East people. No one should disrespect people from other States in India. Treat all human beings as equals,” Rijiju wrote on social media.
The Delhi Police have not yet issued a statement on the incident.
