President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Awards on teachers from across the country at a function held in New Delhi on Friday to mark Teachers’ Day.
In her address, the President said that education, like food, clothing and shelter, is essential for a person’s dignity and security. She noted that responsible teachers play a vital role in instilling dignity and security in children. Reflecting on her own time as a teacher, she described it as a significant period of her life.
The President said that education has the power to transform lives, enabling children from the poorest backgrounds to achieve progress. She added that affectionate and devoted teachers provide the strength for children to aim higher. According to her, the greatest reward for teachers is to be remembered by their students, who later contribute positively to family, society and the nation.
She emphasised that the primary duty of a teacher is to build the character of students. Sensitive, responsible and dedicated students who follow moral conduct, she said, are better than those focused solely on competition or academic success. A good teacher, she noted, brings together both intellect and emotion, a balance that influences students significantly.
The President highlighted the role of technology in classrooms, but emphasised that the most important factor was the presence of skilled teachers. Smart teachers, she explained, are those who understand their students’ developmental needs and make learning both effective and engaging.
She further underlined the importance of girls’ education, calling it the most effective investment in building family, society and the nation. She pointed out that the National Education Policy 2020 prioritises expanding Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and providing facilities for girls from underprivileged backgrounds. She urged teachers to pay special attention to students who are shy or come from disadvantaged sections.
The President said the National Education Policy aims to make India a global knowledge superpower. To achieve this, she added, teachers in India must be recognised among the best in the world and contribute across school, higher and skill education. She expressed confidence that teachers would play a central role in achieving this goal.
