The Department of Ophthalmology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, has introduced advanced cataract, vitreoretinal, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus surgeries, expanding access to specialised eye care in the region.
The department currently records a daily outpatient flow of nearly 150 patients and is positioning itself as a key centre for ophthalmic treatment in the Northeast.
Officials said cataract surgery, one of the most common eye procedures globally, has now been introduced at AIIMS Guwahati using phacoemulsification technology. This technique allows for safe and modern treatment for patients with impaired vision caused by cataracts.
Vitreoretinal surgeries have also been initiated for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and macular disorders. These sight-threatening diseases previously required patients to seek treatment outside the state.
The department has further started conducting strabismus surgeries, which address eye misalignment in children and adults. Such procedures improve vision, depth perception and appearance.
According to the institute, four faculty members with expertise in cataract, retina and paediatric ophthalmology are leading the services. Officials said this allows comprehensive diagnostic and surgical facilities to be provided under one roof.
AIIMS Guwahati stated that the launch of these services marks a step towards making advanced and specialised eye care more accessible to patients across the Northeast.
