President of India Droupadi Murmu flagged off the tournament’s three trophies, continuing a longstanding tradition associated with the event.

This marks the second consecutive year that the President has presided over the ceremony, reinforcing the close connection between the Durand Cup and the country’s highest constitutional office. The event highlights the ongoing role of the Armed Forces in organising the tournament and promoting football as part of a wider national effort to encourage sport and discipline.

The ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff; General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff; Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff; Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Chief of the Air Staff; and Lt General RC Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, who also serves as Patron of the Durand Cup Organising Committee. Indian footballer and Arjuna Award recipient Sandesh Jhingan was also present.

Addressing those in attendance, President Murmu described the Durand Cup as a reflection of India’s football legacy and the sporting ethos of the Armed Forces. She said the tournament not only showcases teamwork and endurance but also provides emerging footballers with a platform to develop their skills. “Football has a special place in the hearts of millions. It is not just a sport; it is a passion. The game of football is all about strategy, endurance and working together towards a common goal,” she said.

General Chauhan, speaking at the event, described the Durand Cup as a symbol of unity and discipline. He said the tournament reflects the values of the Armed Forces and the broader identity of the country. “The Durand Cup is a legacy of valour, discipline, and unity that reflects the finest traditions of our Armed Forces and our nation,” he stated.
