Work on a ropeway connecting Kamakhya Railway Station to the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is progressing swiftly and is expected to be completed soon, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said that the ropeway is part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure for pilgrims. The project is being implemented by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a central agency involved in infrastructure development.
“Work has already progressed significantly. The ropeway will greatly ease the journey for our shraddhalus visiting the sacred Kamakhya Temple,” he said.
Alongside the station-to-temple route, a second ropeway is being planned from Sonaram Field to the hilltop shrine. While both are under development, Sarma confirmed that the Kamakhya Station route is expected to be completed before the Sonaram Field line.
“Tenders have already been issued. Although some temple-related issues caused initial delays, everything is now progressing in an organised and coordinated manner,” he added.
The state government is also conducting feasibility studies for ropeway projects in other parts of the Northeast. These include proposed systems at Biswanath and Bhuban Tirtha in the Barak Valley. According to Sarma, the Centre is placing increasing emphasis on ropeway-based transport to improve accessibility in hilly areas and pilgrimage sites.
“The Government of India is giving top priority to ropeway infrastructure across the Northeast. These projects will boost tourism, ease pilgrim access, and create new economic opportunities,” he said.
The Kamakhya Temple, situated atop Nilachal Hill, is among India’s most significant Shakti Peeths and draws large numbers of visitors throughout the year. The upcoming ropeway is expected to ease the climb and improve access to the temple complex for devotees.
