Imphal: In a landmark moment for queer representation in Manipuri cinema, the film Oneness secured two major honours at the 17th Manipuri State Film Awards, announced on June 26, 2025, at the Manipur State Film Development Society’s (MSFDS) preview theatre.

Directed by Priyakanta Laishram, Oneness is the first Manipuri feature film to openly explore same-sex relationships. It won the prestigious Jury Special Award (Feature Film), conferred on Laishram and producers Roushil Singla and Laishram himself.

Based on the real-life story of Ivan Martin, a young queer boy murdered by a family member for his identity, the film has been widely lauded for its emotional depth, powerful storytelling, and social relevance.

Veteran actress Maya Choudhury was awarded Best Supporting Actor – Female for her role as Anna Martin, Ivan’s conflicted mother. This marks her first-ever film award in a career spanning 28 years.

Earlier this year, Choudhury also earned her first pan-Northeast Best Actress nomination at the 2025 Prag Cine Awards for the same role.

The recognition of Oneness at the state level follows a string of national and international screenings, where the film has earned acclaim for its bold narrative and sensitive portrayal of queer identity and family trauma.

Director Priyakanta Laishram, already regarded as a rising voice in Manipuri cinema, had also won Best Director – Northeast at the 2025 Prag Cine Awards.

With its artistic merit and social message, Oneness has sparked critical conversations both within Manipur and beyond. Its recognition at the State Film Awards marks not just a cinematic achievement, but a cultural milestone for LGBTQ+ visibility in the region.
