Raising concerns over the sluggish progress of a key healthcare infrastructure project, the Phom Peoples’ Council (PPC) and the Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) have jointly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the ongoing construction of the District Hospital in Longleng.
In a recent inspection led by PPC President Y. B. Angam Phom and PSC President C. Sham-e Phom, the two apex organisations found that construction is significantly behind schedule, with the March 2026 deadline appearing increasingly unlikely to be met.
The inspection reportedly revealed “minimal workforce deployment,” prompting an urgent call for action from the contractor and implementing agencies, according to a joint statement shared with EastMojo.
“If this is the pace of progress, how can the contractor, in good conscience, hand over this hospital to the people of Longleng?” questioned Y. B. Angam Phom, while stressing the need for the construction’s quality and speed to reflect the project’s critical importance to the community. “The quality, speed, and seriousness of this project must reflect its importance. Our community deserves better.”
Both bodies have pointed to serious lapses in project planning and execution, terming the delay as “unacceptable” given the hospital’s significance for public health in the district.
In a strongly worded appeal, the PPC and PSC have called upon the concerned departments and executing agencies to immediately increase workforce deployment and technical support on-site.
They have urged all stakeholders to accelerate construction without compromising quality standards. The organisations have also demanded full transparency and accountability throughout the execution process, along with regular public updates on the project’s status.
Warning of intensified scrutiny, the organisations have stated that if no substantial progress is observed in the coming weeks, the matter will be escalated to higher authorities. They also hinted at initiating public monitoring mechanisms to ensure accountability.
“This joint intervention underscores the organisations’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of the Phom community, ensuring that critical infrastructure projects are delivered with integrity, urgency, and transparency,” the two bodies stated.
