Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee held a political session at the Congress Bhavan Golden Hall on Monday, where party leaders strongly criticised the current state and central leadership, citing a growing discontent among farmers and animal rearers in the state.
Addressing the gathering, T. Sangkunga, former MLA and chairman of the Congress Research Cell, said that “in every corner of Mizoram, people miss the leadership of the Congress party.” He claimed that under the current governments, people are suffering due to the lack of critical support in key areas, particularly agriculture and animal husbandry.
Highlighting the issue of fertilizer subsidies, Sangkunga said, “Fertilizer is one of the biggest political concerns in Mizoram today. It is a crucial factor considered even in the Union Budget.” He lamented that with the discontinuation of subsidised fertilizer in Mizoram, farmers are now forced to buy it at high prices, creating significant financial stress.
He also pointed to the struggles faced by animal rearers, many of whom had allegedly benefitted under the Congress’ flagship New Land Use Policy (NLUP). “During the Congress government, many families took up animal rearing through NLUP. Today, fodder is so expensive that they are being forced to consider slaughtering their animals as the only option,” he said.
Sangkunga further criticised the current state government, led by the Mizo National Front (MNF), for being overly dependent on debt to manage state finances. “What’s more unfortunate,” he added, “is that the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government seems to be following the same path.”
He concluded by stating that during the Congress tenure, several developmental projects were sanctioned for Mizoram, which has become rare under the present administration.
