Guwahati: The New Bongaigaon (NBQ) Workshop under Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making notable strides in modernising railway maintenance, boosting passenger satisfaction, and promoting sustainability.
Among its key upgrades is the installation of a D-Cal Cutting Plotter Machine, which replaces the conventional screen-printing method for coach lettering. Unlike screen-printed labels that often fade and wear out, the new system ensures a cleaner, long-lasting finish—enhancing both appearance and durability.
The workshop has also addressed a major passenger grievance by overhauling the Electro-Pneumatic Pressurized Flushing System (EPPFS) in coaches. Previously known for frequent failures and complaints via platforms like Rail Madad, the system has undergone complete revamping—right from water pressurizer units to air filters and control panels—resulting in significantly improved reliability on long routes.
In a major sustainability push, the NBQ Workshop has commissioned a 1 MW rooftop solar project. Despite challenging weather conditions, it is generating an average of 3,850 KWH per day, amounting to around 14.05 lakh KWH annually. By switching to solar, the workshop is expected to save over ₹71.5 lakh each year in electricity costs, reinforcing Indian Railways’ focus on renewable energy and cost efficiency.
Another important innovation is the development of an in-house Roof Leaky Test Facility for covered wagons. The shower-based testing setup helps detect even minor leaks and hairline cracks. Each wagon now undergoes this leak test before and after its Periodical Overhaul (POH), ensuring weatherproofing and safeguarding freight—especially during monsoons.
