Guwahati: India launched military strikes on targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Wednesday, targeting what it described as “terrorist infrastructure.” The strikes come more than two weeks after militants carried out a brutal massacre of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, an incident that has reignited national outrage and calls for justice.
In the immediate lead-up to the strikes, political leaders from across the Northeast expressed strong support for the government’s actions, rallying behind what is being termed Operation Sindoor.
At around 11:00 PM on May 6, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted an update on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “#Update on Crackdown against traitors for defending Pakistan on Indian soil. Sajid Ahmed arrested by @SonitpurPolice. Rojan Ali arrested by @Goalpara_Police. So far 45 Anti Nationals have been parked in our JAILS. We are on the lookout for more.” A few hours later, at 2:52 AM on May 7, he posted again with the simple message: “Jai Hind,” along with the hashtag #OperationSindoor.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh responded on X by writing, “The wounds of Pahalgam still ache, but today, justice has begun to answer. Jai Hind! #OperationSindoor.” Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha posted a brief but emotive message: “Jai Hind 🇮🇳 Bharat Mata Ki Jai #OperationSindoor.” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma echoed the sentiment, writing, “#OperationSindoor India remembers and India fights back. There is no room for terrorism. Jai Hind.”
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also expressed support with a post that read, “Bharat Mata ki Jai 🇮🇳 #OperationSindoor.” Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang added a more detailed statement, saying, “Operation Sindoor stands as a powerful symbol of India’s resolve against terror. On behalf of the people of Sikkim, I salute our brave soldiers who delivered swift justice for the Pahalgam terror attack. Their courage protects our sovereignty and upholds the dignity of every Indian mother who wears sindoor with pride and freedom. Jai Hind!”
