Shillong: The body of missing Hungarian tourist Puskas Zsolt was recovered today at around 1:30 pm in a decomposed state from Rymgku Ksang under Elaka Ramdait near Shella, officials confirmed.
Zsolt had reportedly gone missing on March 29, triggering an intensive search operation conducted by the Fire and Emergency Service of the Sohra Civil Sub-Division, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and villagers from Mawkohwiar and Ramdait.
According to reports, Zsolt had intended to go trekking from Mawsahew to Nongriat. However, he mistakenly ended up at Rymgku Ksang, an isolated and less-travelled area.
The exact circumstances of how the Hungarian reached the location and the cause of his death remain unclear, with police stating they will not comment until accurate information is available. An investigation is currently underway.
The Sordar of Mawkawir explained that the rugged path where Zsolt was found was once commonly used by the people of Mawkawir and Ramdait to travel to Tyrna. The route involved crossing a river using a small living root bridge. However, the trail fell out of use after a cemented path and an iron bridge were constructed, providing a more direct route to Nongriat. Locals now exclusively use the newer path.
According to reports, Zsolt had checked into a hotel in Laitumkhrah at around 3:45 am on March 29. He left the hotel around 9 am and hired a local taxi, which dropped him off at Mawsahew near Sohra around noon. From there, he set out on foot toward Mawkawir, intending to trek to Nongriat with only a backpack.
The Hungarian Embassy reported his disappearance to the local police on April 2.
