Kohima: Nagaland Governor La Ganesan visited Meluri district on Friday, marking a significant moment for the newly created district. Addressing residents, he expressed optimism about Meluri’s developmental potential and lauded Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for officially inaugurating the district on February 21, 2025.
“Meluri may be the youngest district of our state, but it holds immense promise for a bright future,” the Governor said, describing it as “the Land of Fortunes” due to its mineral wealth, biodiversity, and tourism potential.
Governor Ganesan underscored Meluri’s role in boosting international trade, particularly through the proposed inland waterway connecting Myanmar’s Chindwin River with Nagaland’s Tizu River. He emphasized that this project could transform Meluri into a key trade hub, enhancing economic ties with Southeast Asia. Additionally, he highlighted the International Trade Centre at Avangkhu as a crucial gateway for Nagaland’s engagement with ASEAN nations.
Improving road and transport infrastructure remains a top priority, the Governor said, stressing the need for better connectivity between Meluri, the state capital, and Avangkhu, which borders Myanmar. “These advancements will pave the way for economic growth and better access to essential services,” he noted.
While highlighting infrastructure projects, the Governor emphasized that true progress depends on the people. “It is the people, their unity, and their collective spirit that turn vision into reality,” he stated, urging citizens and government agencies to actively support development efforts.
He also called for quality education and healthcare, advocating for well-equipped schools and hospitals to nurture future leaders. Appealing for peace and cooperation, he reminded the people that their demand for a separate district had been met and urged them to work towards stability and growth.
“The whole state and even the country are watching Meluri today,” he said. “Let us show them that our endeavor for peace and equitable development is not just a wish but a reality.”
State officials and community leaders participate
During his visit, the Governor reviewed departmental reports from the Medical, PHED, Education, Agriculture, and NHIDCL departments. A security coordination meeting was also held at the 39 Assam Rifles COB in Meluri.
MLA and Advisor for New & Renewable Energy and NSDMA, Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, along with Pochury Hoho President, also addressed the gathering. Deputy Commissioner Mhathung Tsanglao welcomed the Governor and provided an overview of the district’s development trajectory.
