Kohima: A massive wildfire that broke out in the Sanis village area between Baghty and Bhandari in Wokha district was successfully contained, officials confirmed.
The fire, which originated from a slash-and-burn jhum field, rapidly spread into the surrounding forest, damaging parts of rubber plantations owned by individuals in the vicinity. The fire was contained on Tuesday.
Upon receiving reports of the wildfire in the afternoon, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Wokha and the District Administration swiftly responded to assess the situation.
A team led by Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Civil Bhandari, Arhomo Yanthan, NCS, and Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Champang, Kilangtemsu, NCS, arrived at the scene to monitor containment efforts closely.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (SDPO) Bhandari, R. Phillip Yanthan, dispatched police personnel from Bhandari under DEF Wokha to assist local volunteers who had been battling the flames for several hours.
With reinforcements, firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from reaching a high-tension electricity tower, averting further disaster. However, at around 1:45 AM, the fire reignited near plantation farms. Vigilant volunteers managed to contain it before it could spread further.
No casualties have been reported so far as per an official update.
