Kohima: Raising concerns over the plight of Nagaland’s Village Guards, Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir on Wednesday called for urgent intervention from the Union Home Minister during the ongoing second leg of the Parliament Budget Session 2025.
Highlighting their pivotal role in guarding 120 villages along the Indo-Myanmar border, covering six districts—Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Meluri, Noklak, and Longleng.
Jamir pointed out that the force has been neglected by both the State Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs since its inception in 1957.
He cited the meagre allowances allotted to the village guards, including a monthly salary of Rs 3,000, an annual clothing allowance of Rs 100, and a monthly ration allowance of Rs 60, underscoring the dire conditions under which they operate.
Calling for a revamp and strengthening of the force, Jamir urged the Centre to deploy village guards along the border.
