The 18th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) is currently underway, having commenced on June 15 and running until June 21. This year’s festival showcases a diverse array of films from around the globe.
One of the standout features of the festival is the documentary ‘The Caretakers,’ hailing from Assam. This Assamese-language film, directed by Biswajit Das, delves into the efforts of a conservationist striving to mitigate harmful human-elephant conflicts while fostering community tolerance.
Biswajit Das, a seasoned filmmaker with over two decades of experience, has directed 24 documentary films and more than 100 short animation videos. Beyond his filmmaking endeavors, Das is also an educator, teaching filmmaking and animation at various universities and workshops across India.
‘The Caretakers’ is a poignant documentary underscoring the critical need for action to protect endangered species. The film aims to raise awareness about elephant conflicts and the importance of sustainable development.
Another highlight at MIFF is ‘Birubala: The Witch to Padmashri,’ a short fiction film based on the legend of the renowned Assam witch. Directed by Aimee Baruah and produced by Mala Baruah, this film tells the story of Birubala Rabha, a young woman who combats witchcraft and champions women’s rights. The film’s team also includes cinematographer Bitul Das, and sound designers Amrit Pritam and Debajit Changmai.
