With the development of technology, the global online gambling industry has undergone constant dynamic changes over the last two decades. Not only has players’ main avenue of gambling shifted from physical casinos and storefront bookmakers to online, but deposit methods such as virtual currencies and even more exciting betting options have also increased. AI technology is also bringing revolutionary changes to bookmakers.

At the same time, society is changing with the times. In the most recent years in particular, the number of countries where online gambling is legal has increased dramatically, especially in Europe and the United States. In particular, the United States’ steering toward legalized online gambling in 2021 has changed the balance of power in the gambling industry.

This article will look at several countries around the world and the situation surrounding online gambling in India.

Different Gambling Laws in Asia

In contrast to the West, which has been rapidly moving toward the legalization of online gambling in recent years, the social changes surrounding gambling in Asia do not appear to be as rapid as in the West. While gambling is legal in countries such as the Philippines and Singapore, online gambling is illegal in China and South Korea, for example.

In Japan, under the Gambling Law enacted in the 1880s, gambling activities by enterprises in Japan are prohibited, with the exception of public gambling such as horse and bicycle racing. On the other hand, in reality, now that numerous online bookmakers are operating in Japan from offshore, there is no legal basis to make these operators clearly illegal.

There’s No Nationwide Laws Regarding Getting And Gambling In India

Currently, in India, there are no country-wide laws regarding betting and gambling, therefore rules and regulations in the field differ state by state. Most states use principles of the Public Gambling Act of 1867, under which gambling is illegal when it takes place in a common gaming house or a public place, as a foundation of their stance towards online gambling.

Just like in Japan, where the current gambling law does not take online activities into account, the Indian Public Gambling Act has no mention of the Internet. Ultimately this makes a legal loophole and puts online betting sites into a grey area as long as the operator is not based in India.

Sikkim Being One of the India States That Are Open For Online Gambling

On the other hand, there are actually three states in India where gambling – Goa, Daman and Sikkim. The northeastern state of Sikkim is known to be quite liberal when it comes to the legal situation in gambling. The state permits online gambling under Sikkim Online Gaming (Regulation) Rules 2009, which allows games of luck that include some of the most popular casino games like Roulette, Blackjack, Bingo, Poker, and Baccarat to be played online. Sikkim also allows online lottery, which has been extremely popular throughout the country.

While the gambling law in India does not allow betting companies or betting sites in India to promote or operate online gambling from the country,  it is not illegal for off-shore betting companies to provide online betting service for Indian players, as long as the site accepts India Rupees as a payment method for Indian players.
