Guwahati: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Monday intensified its opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) with a major protest in Mirza, Kamrup district.
The demonstration began with party members lighting candles before a portrait of legendary singer Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, invoking his legacy as a symbol of Assamese identity. Participants then took a pledge to resist the CAA, which they argue poses a serious threat to the state’s cultural and ethnic fabric.
Hundreds of supporters marched through the town carrying placards and shouting slogans against the Act. Protesters particularly criticized the central government’s recent move to extend the deadline for implementing the CAA by another decade.
Addressing the rally, AJP joint secretary Pankaj Lochan Goswami alleged that the BJP was using the law as a political tool. He said it was designed to offer citizenship to Hindu immigrants for electoral gains. “Why should Assam alone bear the burden of the CAA when other northeastern states have rejected it?” he asked.
The protesters declared that the people of Assam would never accept the controversial law, describing it as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and a direct assault on the rights of indigenous communities.
