SILCHAR: A Bangladeshi national, who had been living illegally in India for the past 12 years, was arrested from a house in southern Assam’s Hailakandi district on Monday night.
The individual, identified as Mohammed Siyam Uddin (30), hails from Kanaighat in Sylhet district, Bangladesh. Acting on specific intelligence, a police team led by Hailakandi Deputy Superintendent of Police (Probationary) B. Nath conducted an operation in Dhanipur, Lala, about 17 km from Hailakandi, and apprehended Siyam. The house owner, Taj Uddin Choudhury, was also arrested for providing shelter to the illegal immigrant.
On Tuesday, both Siyam and Taj were presented before a court, which remanded them to police custody for one day.
During interrogation, Siyam revealed that he had illegally crossed into India from Bangladesh via the India-Bangladesh international border in Karimganj district 12 years ago. He initially lived in Guwahati before moving to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. While in Bengaluru, he befriended Taj Uddin Choudhury’s son, Sabbir Ahmed Choudhury, and eventually settled in Dhanipur with him.
Siyam had also managed to obtain fake identity documents, including a PAN card and Aadhaar card, by listing Taj as his father. These documents were seized by the police during the operation. He further mentioned that both of his parents had passed away, and he has no remaining family in Bangladesh.
A police source confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to gather more details about Siyam’s activities in Lala and his time in India.
