Tezpur Airport to shut down until 2026 for major renovations

Flight services at Tezpur Airport will be suspended for one and a half years starting in October 2024 to allow for essential maintenance works, according to a senior official. Tezpur Airport Director G Shiva Kumar announced on Wednesday that passenger flights will cease from 1 October 2024 to 31 March 2026.

“This is due to the resurfacing works of the runway along with other projects to improve the facilities at the terminal,” said Kumar. The Tezpur Airport, which shares its runway with the adjacent Tezpur Base of the Indian Air Force, caters to both commercial and military aircraft.

The Tezpur Air Force Base had previously notified the Tezpur Salonibari Passenger Airport Authority about the upcoming maintenance, necessitating the temporary halt of passenger flight services. Kumar added that during the suspension period, the authority is considering offering helicopter services from Tezpur to Guwahati, although this plan is yet to be finalised.

Currently, a 90-seater SpiceJet flight operates daily from Tezpur to Kolkata. Additionally, two airlines run daily flights to Kolkata via Guwahati, Pasighat, and Tezpur.

The Tezpur Airport is situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, 12 km from Tezpur town, the capital of Sonitpur district. Established in 1942 at Salonibari, the airport terminal has the capacity to accommodate 400 passengers at a time.
