Assam's Esah Tea introduces microplastic-free tea bags

Esah Tea, an Assam-based direct-to-consumer (D2C) tea brand, has unveiled the world’s first microplastic-free cotton tea bags. Priced at just ₹5 per bag, these innovative tea bags are 100% chemical-free, biodegradable, and handmade, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to sustainability and customer health. This launch follows alarming findings from McGill University researchers, who discovered that conventional plastic tea bags release 11.9 billion harmful microplastic particles per cup.

The significance of Esah Tea’s innovation is underscored by the potential health risks associated with microplastic consumption. These tiny particles, when ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin, pose serious health risks, including cellular damage, immune system disruption, neurotoxicity, reproductive issues, and even carcinogenic effects.

Bijit Sarma, Founder and CEO of Esah Tea, remarked, “At Esah Tea, we see ourselves as custodians of a rich tea heritage. The introduction of our microplastic-free cotton tea bags is not merely a product launch—it’s a paradigm shift in tea production and consumption. We’re addressing a critical health and environmental issue while elevating the tea-drinking experience. This launch exemplifies our belief that exceptional quality, responsible production, and environmental stewardship can coexist in perfect harmony. I am extremely thankful to our R&D team whose day and night efforts have brought our toxin-free tea bags to fruition. We invite conscious consumers to sip responsibly and sustainably with Esah Tea.”

Esah Tea offers over 20 variants, including Honey Lemon Green Tea, Organic Assam Breakfast Tea, Organic Handmade Black Tea, and flavour-infused options such as Organic Blue Tea, Organic Lychee Black Tea, Organic Chamomile Green Tea, Organic Peach Green Tea, Organic Vanilla Chai, and Rose Lychee Black Tea. The brand also features instant chai variants like Cardamom, Masala, and Kadak chai, along with the health-focused Instant Mango Turmeric Latte. Priced between ₹199 and ₹399, Esah Tea products are available nationwide through online channels, including the official website and major e-commerce platforms like Amazon. The brand also has a presence in select retail stores across major cities, including BKD, Rajmandir, Shubham Store, and Kisan Mandi in Delhi, and Modern Bazaar, Sodhi’s Supermart, Ravi and Rohit Departmental Store in Gurgaon, among others.

Since its founding in 2021, Esah Tea has seen remarkable growth. Initially available in ten premium stores, the brand now boasts a presence in over 600 stores nationwide. Internationally, Esah Tea exports to more than ten countries, including the USA, South Korea, Abu Dhabi, and the UK. With a growing customer base exceeding 100,000 individuals both online and offline, the brand’s strategy of offering free in-store tea tastings has garnered positive feedback and encouraged immediate purchases. Looking forward, Esah Tea aims to expand to 5,000 outlets across India by 2024. Additionally, the brand plans to convert over 20,000 acres of land to organic tea cultivation in Assam and onboard more than 1,000 local small tea growers by 2025.

Founded in 2019 by Bijit Sarma, Esah Tea is dedicated to providing an ultimate and fresh tea experience. The brand believes in sharing joy and warmth, best enjoyed with a cup of tea. Headquartered in Mangaldoi, Assam, Esah Tea works closely with local tea gardeners to ensure high quality.
