Guwahati: The Assam Police busted an interstate drug peddling syndicate, recovering narcotics valued at Rs 20 crore in Karimganj district.
Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das in Karimganj told IANS that the breakthrough came after intercepting a vehicle in the Nilambazar area of the district on Friday night.
The search revealed a staggering stash of 1 lakh Yaba tablets concealed within secret compartments of the vehicle.
Two individuals, identified as Abul Hasan and Saharul Islam, both residents of Karimganj District, were apprehended on charges of drug trafficking in connection with the operation.
Hasan, a resident of Dimapur, was identified as a significant supplier and transporter of narcotics in the Upper Assam region. Law enforcement had been tracking his activities for the past six months, culminating in the successful seizure of the illicit drugs.
The international market value of the confiscated narcotics is estimated to be around Rs 20 crore, as stated by the police official.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the police operation, praising their vigilance in combating the narcotics trade. In a social media post, he announced, “In a major crackdown on the narcotics network, @karimganjpolice, acting on a specific input intercepted a vehicle in Srikrishna Nagar and seized 1,00,000 YABA tablets from its secret chambers”.
Sarma further revealed that the intercepted consignment had originated from a neighbouring state.
