Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the custody of two ISIS operatives who were apprehended by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police. Inspector General (IG) of Assam Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, confirmed this development on Thursday.
“We have handed over these two individuals to the NIA due to a pending case. The NIA took custody of the duo,” stated Assam Police IG Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
Later on the same day, the NIA produced the two top ISIS leaders at the special NIA court in Guwahati, Assam.
On Wednesday, the Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) conducted a successful counter-terrorism operation, leading to the apprehension of two suspected high-ranking ISIS leaders. Acting on intelligence inputs, the Assam STF team tracked down the accused, Haris Farooqi and Anurag Singh, along the Bangladesh border in the Dhubri sector.
Farooqi, identified as the head of ISIS in India, and Singh, his converted associate, were allegedly planning to enter India for sabotage activities. Both individuals were purportedly involved in recruitment, terror funding, and plotting attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for ISIS.
