As the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) came into force on Monday, the Assam government has warned the opponents of the law that any legal action will be taken against them if they continue to protest against it.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that he will be the first to step down from the post of chief minister if even a single person who has not applied for NRC has been granted citizenship. He has also emphasised that the citizenship law is not new and has urged people to apply through the designated portal.
As per Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the data on the portal will speak now and it will become clear whether the claims of those opposing the Act stand factually correct or not. The state police have also said that all the security personnel will be deployed to maintain peace and order in the state.
