Guwahati: In a shocking, a man has been apprehended by the police in Guwahati, Assam, for allegedly masquerading as a doctor for more than four decades.
Identified as Premananda Rai, the accused purportedly practiced medicine without any valid degree at the New Mahamaya Medicos pharmacy in the Lal Ganesh locality of Guwahati for over 40 years.
Reports indicate that Rai exploited the registration number of a legitimate doctor, Surendra Narayan from West Bengal, to deceive patients and present himself as a qualified medical professional.
His illicit practices allegedly commenced in 1983 and persisted for decades, raising serious concerns about the potential risks posed to unsuspecting patients.
In addition to impersonating a doctor, Rai is accused of issuing counterfeit death certificates, further compounding the gravity of his fraudulent activities.
The police took Rai into custody on Tuesday night following a complaint lodged by Dr. Abhijit Neog. Subsequently, the pharmacy operated by Rai was sealed by law enforcement authorities as part of their ongoing investigation into the matter.
The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals engaging in unauthorized medical practices. Police sources said the accused would be produced before the Court soon.
