SILCHAR: Maulana Anam Ullah, former AIUDF leader from south Assam‘s Barak Valley who was suspended from the party recently after a video purportedly showing him enjoying a cam-sex session video went viral on social media, was apprehended by Assam police on Tuesday for his suspected involvement in various illegal businesses, including unlawful trade of coal and Burmese betel nut.
Sources in police said Anam, who was the secretary of the AIUDF’s central committee, was arrested from Kalain, about 30 km from Silchar town in Cachar district on Tuesday evening. He was then taken to Silchar Sadar police station, where he was interrogated for hours, sources said.
Cachar superintendent of police Ramandeep Kaur said: “Anam was arrested on the suspicion that he is involved in various clandestine businesses, including illegal trade of coal and Burmese betel nuts. Operations to curb the unlawful businesses will be continued in the future,” Kaur said.
Complaints over the past several months have poured in from various quarters about Anam’s involvement in the unlawful trade of coal, Burmese betel nut and fertilisers in Barak Valley. Besides, a case was registered against him at Katigorah police station in the past for allegedly molesting a housewife.
Earlier this month, he courted controversy again after a video purportedly showing him enjoying a cam-sex session went viral on social media, following which he was suspended from the AIUDF.
As the news of Anam’s arrest spread on Tuesday evening, it caused a stir among the people who are allegedly involved in the illegal trade of coal and Burmese betel nut and work with him. Sources said it is being expected that police, after interrogating Anam, would be able to find out the names of more people involved in the illegal trade of various items in Barak Valley and more details of other clandestine businesses.
It may be mentioned that police, in the past few months, have nabbed many people in Barak Valley for their suspected involvement in illegal trade of coal, Burmese betel nuts and fertilisers in Barak Valley.
On March 20, a man was arrested by the Assam police’s CID from a hotel in Chamragudam area of Silchar town for his suspected nexus with a racket running unlawful trade of fertilisers in Barak Valley. Jahangir Alam Choudhury, who hails from Chamragudam, was later taken to Guwahati for interrogation.
Altaf Hussain and Jakir Ahmed Talukdar were arrested from Chamragudam area in Silchar on February 19 for their suspected involvement in illegal trade of Burmese betel nuts in the valley. Suspected supari mafia leader Didarul Haque (alias Bablu) was arrested from Brahmangram, Kalain in Cachar district on January 7.
Two suspected coal mafia leaders Aurobindo Baishnab and Jubairul Islam were arrested by police from Cachar district’s Gumrah on November 25, 2021. Aurobindo is a resident of Digarkhal (Cachar), while Jubairul hails from Gumrah.
On November 13, 2021, three men Iqbal Hossain Talukdar and Farij Ahmed Mazumder of Hailakandi district’s Panchgram and Jubair Ahmed of Cachar district’s Khelma, Gumrah were nabbed from Cachar district’s Madhua for their suspected nexus with a racket running the unlawful transport of coal from Meghalaya to Barak Valley.
