Axom Nagarik Samaj, a citizen’s body of Assam, expressed concern and sought an immediate judicial inquiry over the mob-lynching case in Jorhat that took place on Monday and the death of the main accused while allegedly trying to escape from police custody a day after.
In a press release, the organisation said, “The police and the administration have miserably failed in providing security to the public.”
“A young man was beaten to death by an angry mob and police could do nothing. This is a complete failure of the police administration. Ensuring safety and security to the public is their main duty. We condemn the failure of the police,” it said.
The organisation also expressed its concern at the apathy shown by the public to save Animesh Bhuyan from the group of attackers, “Even the people of Jorhat town acted indifferently. As a society, this reflects our collective moral decay and major failure as citizens.”
In their press statement, Axom Nagarik Samaj also expressed concern over the death of one of the main accused of the incident, Neeraj Das, when he reportedly attempted to escape police custody on Tuesday night.
“It is said that the main accused died after being hit by a vehicle while he attempted to run away from police custody. The situation that led to the death of the accused person suggests that the incident was pre-planned. We are compelled to believe this because, in the recent past, such instances of killing the convicts have become a routine thing for the Assam police,” it said.
“The police, which have failed to maintain peace and order and provide safety to the people, are engaged in killing accused persons without any probe, this is a dangerous tendency. Who has given Assam police such power?” it further added.
