Guwahati: The last rites of martyred Rifleman Suman Swargiary of 46 Assam Rifles was performed with full state honour at his ancestral village of Thaikarakuchi in lower Assam’s Baksa district on Monday afternoon.
Suman was the only son of Kanak Swargiary and Lalita Swargiay. One of his uncle’s sons kindled the pyre.
State ministers Keshab Mahanta and UG Brahma along with senior police and military officials were present during the last journey of the slain jawan, who was killed along with seven others in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Saturday.
A vehicle carrying his mortal remains had reached his ancestral village at Thaikarkuchi in the morning.
The flight carrying Suman Swargiary’s body from Imphal to Guwahati had to make an emergency landing at Jorhat airport following a technical snag. The mortal remains of the brave soldier remained at the airport for the whole night.
His body was brought to GNBI Airport at Borjhat in Guwahati at 7.30 am on Monday.
Suman was supposed to return home in December for his son’s third birthday, his family members shared, adding that just an hour before the ambush that took his life, he had spoken to wife Juri over phone.
Swargiary’s family members who live in Thoikerakuchi, under Barama police station of Baksa district, received the news of his death only on Sunday morning.
Besides Suman Swargirary, Saturday’s attack also killed seven Assam Rifles personnel including the Commanding Officer, his wife and their 8-year-old son.
Suman had joined the forces in 2011, four years after his father, a member of a local peace committee, was killed by militants in 2007. They had riddled his body with bullets at his home.
