Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday paid tributes to the victims of the 2008 blasts in the state.
“On this day in 2008, countless innocent people were killed in the brutal terrorist attacks in various parts of Assam, including Guwahati. We pay our deepest respects to every innocent person who has fallen victim to this terrorism,” chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
Meanwhile, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), while remembering the victims of those who were killed in the 2008 blasts, said the accused behind the attack are yet to be arrested.
Why black day in Assam today?
October 30 is remembered as the darkest day of Assam as hundreds died in the serial blasts in 2008 that rocked the state. The black day is observed every year in Assam on October 30 in memory of those who died in the serial blasts 13 years back.
On this day in 2008, nine blasts ripped through Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta Road, and Bongaigaon, killing over 88 people and injuring another 500.
The three blasts in Guwahati took place in Ganeshguri, Kachari and Panbazar and claimed as many as 53 lives.
The mastermind behind the horrific blasts was the chief of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Ranjan Daimary.
Daimary and 14 others involved in the 2008 blasts were sentenced to life in prison by a CBI court in 2020.
Since then, every year Assam observes ‘black day’ on October 30.
Every year on this day, people pay tributes to the dead below the Ganeshguri flyover and at CJM court in Guwahati’s Panbazar and many other places.
