Dibrugarh: Tension was reported near Likabali along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Thursday after stone-pelting incidents, prompting Assam Police to fire four rounds, sources said.
No injuries were reported, and the situation is under control, according to sources. Authorities are closely monitoring developments.
The incident comes amid an economic blockade in several border areas of north Assam since Wednesday. The Takam Mising Porin Kebang had called a 12-hour shutdown in Dhemaji district after 11 Assam villagers were allegedly fired upon in the Mingmang Bodoti area along the interstate boundary on Monday.
The firing followed a dispute over land claimed by Assam and alleged occupation by people from Arunachal Pradesh.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to people on both sides to maintain peace and harmony.
“Assam and Arunachal Pradesh share a bond that goes far beyond boundaries,” Sarma said in a post on X, adding that the two states had resolved most border differences through dialogue and friendship.
He said 52 villages remain under dispute and both governments would continue discussions to resolve the matter.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said he had held discussions with the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union and representatives of the Galo Welfare Society, Galo Students Union and Dolok Bango Welfare Society over the situation at Hime village near the Assam border.
“The priority is to facilitate dialogue, and restore normalcy at the earliest,” Khandu said, adding that stakeholders were being engaged to maintain peace and mutual trust.
