Arunachal promotes dairy farming with Jersey cattle under VVP

Dibrugarh: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Friday distributed 105 High Genetic Merit (HGM) Jersey crossbred cattle to 35 beneficiaries in Tawang district under the Centre’s Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods in border areas.

The distribution programme was held at Gyangkhar village in Tawang district.

Sharing the development on X, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said strengthening border villages through economic opportunities is key to ensuring their long-term sustainability.

“The best way to secure our borders is to ensure that our border villages remain prosperous, self-reliant and full of opportunity. In Tawang district, 35 beneficiaries have received 105 pedigreed Jersey crossbred cattle, creating new opportunities for sustainable dairy farming and year-round income,” Khandu said.

He thanked the Union government, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and NDDB Dairy Services for supporting the initiative.

“I wish all our beneficiaries every success as they take this important step towards building sustainable dairy enterprises and stronger, more vibrant villages,” the chief minister added.

High Genetic Merit (HGM) Jersey crossbred cattle are bred to combine the high milk yield of exotic Jersey cattle with the adaptability, heat tolerance and disease resistance of indigenous breeds. They are considered suitable for sustainable dairy farming, particularly in the Northeast, due to their efficient feed-to-milk conversion and relatively high-fat milk production.

The Vibrant Villages Programme is a centrally sponsored initiative aimed at the comprehensive development of remote border villages by improving infrastructure, strengthening local livelihoods and reducing migration from frontier areas.
