Arunachal: Students march 65 km protest shortage of teachers

Guwahati: According to The Arunachal Times, nearly 90 students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Nyangno village, Pakke-Kessang district, staged a midnight protest on Sunday, walking more than 65 kilometres to the district headquarters Lemmi to highlight the shortage of teachers in their school.

The march, led by Class 11 and 12 students, began around midnight and culminated in Lemmi on Monday morning. Students carried placards with slogans such as “A school without a teacher is just a building”, demanding immediate appointment of subject teachers for geography and political science.

Frustration had reportedly been brewing for months, as the senior classes continued without teachers for the two subjects despite half the academic year having already passed.

The school’s headmistress confirmed the shortage but stated that the institution has sufficient teachers for other classes and subjects. She noted that the half-yearly syllabus had already been completed, and expressed regret that the students’ actions might have tarnished the school’s image.

The commissioner of education had earlier issued an order on 27 August directing district education officials to allocate teachers from merged schools to KGBVs and NSCBAVs as per the pupil-teacher ratio, while imposing a complete ban on new recruitments.
