Guwahati: Supporters of a National People’s Party (NPP) candidate in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district turned violent on Thursday after his nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny. The incident left a senior police officer injured and two police vehicles damaged.
The rampage erupted around 3 pm outside the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office following the rejection of Gangdiap Gansa’s nomination for the Pongchau-Wakka assembly seat. According to police reports, a mob of around 100 people resorted to stone-pelting, injuring Superintendent of Police Dekio Gumja.
To control the situation, security forces fired rounds into the air, dispersing the crowd. The situation is now reportedly under control.
Gansa’s nomination was reportedly rejected due to an issue concerning an office of profit. While he had submitted his resignation as an assistant mineral development officer (AMDO) before the election schedule announcement, it was not accepted by the government.
These events come amidst the upcoming Arunachal Assembly elections scheduled for April 19. It is important to note that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has recently extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in three districts of Arunachal Pradesh for six months. This decision follows a review of the law and order situation in the northeastern state.
