The Tawang District in Arunachal Pradesh has experienced heavy snowfall since February 22, 2024, leading to traffic disruptions and road closures. In an exceptional display of dedication, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) exceeded its mandate of maintaining open roads and conducted a daring rescue operation to evacuate about 70 stranded tourists and locals at the Sela Pass.
The incident unfolded when several vehicles became trapped at the Sela Pass during the night of February 22nd to 23rd, prompting the swift mobilization of men and equipment by the 42 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) of Project Vartak.
Undeterred by the bone-chilling cold, with temperatures plummeting below -10 degrees Celsius, the dedicated team worked tirelessly throughout the night. Their efforts proved successful as they managed to move the stranded individuals to safety by 4:30 am on February 23. Project Vartak has demonstrated unwavering commitment by deploying personnel around the clock, not only at Sela Pass but also on other crucial roads in the region, ensuring accessibility for traffic at all times.

Earlier this month too, heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Tawang District and Sela Pass led to the accumulation of snow on roads, causing disruptions to traffic. In response to this challenge, Project Vartak of the Border Roads Organisation took swift action by deploying resources along crucial axes and bottlenecks, including the Sela Pass, Y-Jn, Shungetsar, Klemta, and Zimithang Sector.
