Manipur CM appeals for safe immediate release of civilians

Ukhrul: The situation in the Shangkai area along National Highway 202 in Ukhrul district remains tense after two bodies from the Kuki community were recovered on Thursday morning.

The two persons were likely killed during the gunfight at Thawai village on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Thangboimang Khongsai of Shangkai Kuki village and Thengin Baite of Thowai Kuki Village.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh told the ongoing Manipur Assembly that the government will hand over the case related to the death of the two persons at Thawai Kuki village to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

He also told the House that the government will provide an ex-gratia payment to the bereaved families in accordance with established rules.

The Chief Minister also stated that his government remains committed to ensuring justice, maintaining law and order, and upholding the rule of law in the state.

Meanwhile, a viral video circulating on social media shows residents of Shangkai, a Kuki village, blocking the Imphal–Ukhrul road in protest.

Also, in Mongkot Chepu near Litan, another Kuki area, locals allegedly attacked the escort vehicle of the Superintendent of Police, Ukhrul, resulting in injuries to one police personnel.

Early on Thursday morning, twenty-one passengers from Ukhrul who had been captured at Shangkai village on Wednesday were safely rescued.

The rescued individuals were handed over to representatives of Tangkhul civil society organisations at Litan Police Station. Subsequently, they were brought to the Tangkhul Naga Long office, where they were reunited with their respective family members.
